THE CHALLENGE
A beloved market stuck in the past
Sunshine Market, a student-run grocery store at UC San Diego, needed a fresh visual identity to better reflect its playful, retro vibe. The old signage and marketing materials felt outdated and disconnected, and its new mascot, Sunny was not used in-store.
THE SOLUTION
Designing for cohesion across shelves and screens
Working within UC San Diego's branding guidelines, I used the existing color palette and typography to create a cohesive design system that balanced Sunshine Market's retro charm with modern clarity.
Instagram Posts
Redesigned Instagram content templates for a consistent social presence.
In-Store Signange
Redesigned posters, notices, and wayfinding materials to be bold and readable, while incorporating Sunny.
In-Store TV Ads
Designed bright, high-contrast frames with minimal text for quick readability to be displayed on screens at the front of the store.
IMPACT
Clarity and cohesion that customers and staff notice
The refreshed visuals made the store feel more welcoming and cohesive. Staff and customers noted that the market was easier to navigate, and Sunny became a recognizable element tying digital and physical spaces together.
“I love Sunny! It really gives more personality to the place.”
- Market customer
"The signs used to be confusing, but now it's easier to understand.”
- Market customer
“We have less students asking for questions with the new signs.”
- Market staff member
REFLECTION
Brand longevity comes from cohesive systems, not single assets
This project taught me how to revitalize an existing brand without changing its core identity, working within predefined colors and type while creating a modern multi-channel design system.
